thinking about courage
As the nation celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. today, I've been thinking about courage. Think about the courage it took for him to be bold.
Think about the courage it took for Rosa Parks to defy convention and refuse to give up her seat.
Think about the courage it took for twelve teenagers in Clinton, Tennessee - known as The Clinton 12 - to become some of the first African-American students to attend and graduate from an integrated public high school in the South of the late 1950's.
As I think about their courage - and the courage of so many others in the Civil Rights Movement - I find this quote (from another man of amazing courage) particularly poignant:
"The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
(Nelson Mandela)
Where I am: home
What I'm reading: the Winter issue of Life:Beautiful
(Photo #1 - the exact bus on which Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat...now on display at The Henry Ford Museum.)
(Photo #2 - Mr. Bobby Cain, one of the Clinton 12...speaking on campus today as part of the celebrations.)
