hakuna matata!
To cap off my weekend of not getting quite as much done as I should have, I went to see "The Lion King" with my good friend Dave on Sunday evening...because what better way to celebrate leaving Texas than with a Broadway musical?!?! And wow - such an awesome show! The opening sequence alone was stunning - especially the somewhat life-size "elephant" - and the rest of the show was much the same. Even cooler, I kinda headed into the show with few expectations or opinions of what the show would or wouldn't be...and that made the artistry and talent all the more amazing.
For those who don't know much about the theatrical show of "The Lion King", what they've done is taken the script and sequences of the animated movie from ten-plus years ago and turned it into a beautiful combination of puppetry, dance and song. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by how much of the original script they included in the show...and a little worried that after not seeing the movie in quite a while, I could still quote many of the lines as they were performed. (One of these days, I'll learn to put all this brain power to a good use!)
Seriously, though, it's a very well-done adaptation that also brings a modern, artistic and culturally-reflective flavor to the story. This was a great way to experience "The Lion King" as a "grown-up", and yet marvel like a little kid at the performers and the costumes and the music. Especially the costumes...the designers' creativity in creating the "animals" of the show is fascinating...although if you want to figure out how some of the costumes work, it helps to have an engineer in the seat beside you. Especially when the engineer is such good company...even if he keeps yawning after being outside all day and consuming large amounts of delicious Chinese (Vietnamese?) food at our dinner before the show.
So go see "The Lion King"...it's so worth it!! (Helpful engineer not included...well, unless he wants to be...you'll have to ask him.)
