fun times with karen

Thursday and Friday, I once again got to partake in one of my favorite job perks - hanging out with good friends in whatever area I'm visiting. This time it was Karen, and I was especially happy to spend time with her since I'm on my way out of Texas. She and I are apparently establishing a habit of visiting each other right before one of us moves out of state...the only difference is that she moves back. But I digress...

There are many reasons Karen is such a wonderful person...but I have packing to do, so I'll offer five.

1. She is a hugger...always offering a friendly hug to say "hi" or "see you soon", even when you've been driving in a hot car in the Texas heat and are a bit sweaty as a result.

2. She is a movie fanatic...which, due to her growing addiction to midnight showings, can sometimes make it difficult to choose a movie to see, but which also means she won't think you're weird if you get really into the movie (Pirates of the Caribbean - yay! Orlando Bloom...without a shirt - nice!) and the plot (the strike of the Kraken - oooh! the poor doggie - sigh!) and the details (the rules of the dice game - wtf?)...mostly because she's doing the same thing.

3. She makes me laugh...just by being herself. Her enthusiasm and candor make for great conversation and wonderful company, whether we're making fun of the dork on his cell phone in the movie theater or discussing the challenges of relationships.

4. She revels in the random small things that make life interesting and amusing...whether it's wondering why there are no women in the Tour de France, or totally digging 7.11-ounce slurpees, or planning pajama parties. Everything has the potential to be entertaining or at least distracting...and that's fun.

5. She has a generous heart...from opening her home to friends who stop by to offering her assistance with projects and tasks to ensuring her friends have a little token of Texas to take with them when they leave, she is a kind and caring person.

(the cute little charm bracelet she got for me!)

I am so fortunate to have such an amazing person as a friend and brother, and if there's anything that could bring me back to Texas, it would be visiting her. Thank goodness she's only a plane ride away.

Days left in Texas: four

Karen is an exceptionally great person :-) And a hearty "amen" to the joys of Orlando Bloom shirtless!
Glad you enjoyed some great times as you prepare for your move.

An early welcome to the Northeast - or well, almost Northeast. Not sure how to refer to PA.

Hope you like cold weather - and loads of snow :)

I could get used to all the accolades. Thank you for a wonderfully sweet post. You are the BEST. And we are sure going to miss you. And as Bowling for Soup would say (in their hit song of course) "Come back to Texas. It's just not the same since you went away. Before you lose your accent and forget all about the Lone Star State!" Travel Safe.
