<br />
Several years ago, <a href="https://sleepeybearsspot.blogspot.com/2008/05/this-week-was-good-because-of.html" target="_blank">I started a weekly habit</a> of reflecting on what had been good in those seven days. As time went by, it evolved into something that was more complicated to manage as I tried to include more and more - links to articles I'd appreciated, etc. - and the habit was easy to let fall to the wayside, especially as I posted here less in general.<br />
<br />
As I have been settling into my 2020 word (centered) though, I've felt drawn back to establishing a more intentional practice of gratitude. Specifically, I feel a need to be more {centered}in the knowledge that where I am right now - emotionally, professionally, even geographically - has purpose. Then, earlier this month, I was reading an article in <a href="https://magnolia.com/journal/" target="_blank">one of my favorite magazines</a> about purpose, which included these two insights:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>"I believe each of us can choose to see the purpose in where we stand today...if we can </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>live more intentionally on the way, then perhaps every season can start to feel meaningful."</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>"What if your purpose comes from entirely unplanned circumstances, and </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>suddenly, what you are meant to do is simply to respond with a full heart?"</b></div>
<br />
Hmm. "A full heart." That sounds a lot like gratitude to me. So here I am, resuming my weekly practice with the simple intention to pause and reflect.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRNp9D8BBrYifbyRd9KNydEzAWeH6p66xPriQXiPNBpWWG78sJYMs3hVkYhLOQv5ivkf0j50i5hAdgN6sl11axKMFXmIcjDWd6bu9l2Gq2ZSf-p4YzYDpLRtOFa_uM9wOZFPi7/s1600/20200322_121003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRNp9D8BBrYifbyRd9KNydEzAWeH6p66xPriQXiPNBpWWG78sJYMs3hVkYhLOQv5ivkf0j50i5hAdgN6sl11axKMFXmIcjDWd6bu9l2Gq2ZSf-p4YzYDpLRtOFa_uM9wOZFPi7/s400/20200322_121003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>This week was good because of...</b><br />
<br />
...the opportunity to practice grace for myself in the midst of an extremely challenging week at work.<br />
<br />
...the support my husband provided when that week of work required my time and presence on the weekend.<br />
<br />
...having courage to step outside my comfort zone and do a live Instagram feed.<br />
<br />
...the reminder in today's sermon that all the preventive measures we are being called to implement in our lives are an act of love toward our neighbors.<br />
<br />
...the delightful joy of life with our adorable cat.<br />
<br />
...hanging pictures on the walls of our new home.<br />

<br />
For the past couple of years, my reading goal has been 52 books a year (one a week). In 2019, I definitely did not get anywhere close to that goal; and I have other ambitions for 2020 that I know may limit my ability to read to that level.<br />
<br />
So 26 books in 2020 is where I've set my sights; and that first book was a pretty awesome refresher for {centering} myself and feeling mentally ready for the new year.Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09516298467275236388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8850304.post-46611177922018397062018-08-31T08:57:00.000-04:002018-09-13T18:12:55.447-04:00focus: making the most of an unexpected day<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With my new job, for the first time in many years, I am an hourly employee instead of salaried. While there is certainly an advantage to having a Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm kind of schedule, the transition into that schedule has actually not been an easy one...in part because I'm the only one in a seven-person department who is hourly, and in part because that's just not how my brain functions after so many years of extended-hours work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It also means that my Director and I have to be very thoughtful about when I need to work overtime, and where I can use comp time to balance at least some of that overtime without taking away from the ongoing responsibilities of my position. Thus it was that I found myself taking this past Friday as a comp day - to help offset the many extra hours I'd worked during our "start of the semester" busy season.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Initially, I was frustrated - because any time a busy season subsides, I want to turn my attention back to other work that may have been pushed aside. But then I realized what a gift this day to myself really was, and chose to <b><i>FOCUS</i></b> on making the most of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It's been six months since we moved into our new home, and I still marvel at the awesome sequence of events that led us to this place.<br />
<br />
When we moved back to Kentucky last fall, Wildcat Guy had a job, and I was on the market. At the time, we were grateful for the opportunity to live with my parents, which allowed us to save money and avoid the financial commitment of any type of lease during that interim. Our vision was that I would search for something within a certain proximity of his job, and we would decide where to live, geographically, once I found something.<br />
<br />
Then, on 14 February, I accepted a new job, and was asked to start just 12 days later, on the 26th. Nothing like a time crunch, right? But to make life even more interesting, I had plans to spend 6 of those 12 days visiting friends in Michigan.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmdZzXwOT29V-184_jykk0XsKB0h3Ol-YTNFaeLhmiKk498wuvMXJhIF6z0tVHexb8eKuLeuhIfOJY_YjlBfbglyHoIb2uf3aQEhETi5ncnR5gw8KG3px_tLLRCcawNChs56Nt/s1600/DSC05027+%2528Welcome+to+Pure+Michigan%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="854" data-original-width="1600" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmdZzXwOT29V-184_jykk0XsKB0h3Ol-YTNFaeLhmiKk498wuvMXJhIF6z0tVHexb8eKuLeuhIfOJY_YjlBfbglyHoIb2uf3aQEhETi5ncnR5gw8KG3px_tLLRCcawNChs56Nt/s640/DSC05027+%2528Welcome+to+Pure+Michigan%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
While I traveled, Wildcat Guy and my mom spent some time driving around the town we'd picked, midway between his workplace and mine, to see the neighborhoods and find out what might be available. I offered feedback when I could, thanks to the convenience of Zillow and other online listings. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to be available on such short notice.<br />
<br />
When I returned to Kentucky on the 21st, we had still not found anything; but we headed back to that same town on Thursday the 22nd to see what may be opening up in the near future, while also acknowledging the possibility that we might have to find an extended-stay hotel to tide us over until an apartment became available.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5U83wIr66T_7wgtNdZcPoxVDjUYOQspoe9c0Egsa34wgWKEDd3O4xyQpDGTujdCY3Hx23mNoH-wdFYN6uEqyVMbgIE-kIXV9q28IuwMuJgGrYjcm7b8Kramakrn_SWoBhwTWm/s1600/DSC05135+%2528empty+living+room%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5U83wIr66T_7wgtNdZcPoxVDjUYOQspoe9c0Egsa34wgWKEDd3O4xyQpDGTujdCY3Hx23mNoH-wdFYN6uEqyVMbgIE-kIXV9q28IuwMuJgGrYjcm7b8Kramakrn_SWoBhwTWm/s640/DSC05135+%2528empty+living+room%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Our first stop that Thursday was an apartment complex that we'd developed a good vibe for. The property was in a convenient location, the staff were kind and helpful on the phone, and as we drove to the clubhouse, we were impressed by the visible maintenance and care. The only unit they had to offer was a one-bedroom, but the layout was appealing, and the price was well below budget. It would also be available in just a couple of weeks.<br />
<br />
We decided to take it. Application completed, we headed to lunch.<br />
<br />
On our way to lunch, they called to let us know our application had been approved; and we made plans to stop by later to pay a deposit. It was with a big sigh of relief that we sat down to eat that meal.<br />
<br />
But then, while we were at lunch, the apartment staff called again. To ask if we might be interested in a two-bedroom unit instead - a two-bedroom unit that had been prepared for someone to move in the next day, but for which that someone had cancelled their lease.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUBy0FQ-Mf4aYr_v1SZcyWVuwCsMEHvl5hy4Bd9BoBpKY0qnJ2_dTeJDItxOAKrgCoAWWv2Y7LkAIJ8Z965M_17apgiMeIddw31NEIPB2gDrUgdckLnUjGq1Nfplb7X_XCn4Ts/s1600/DSC05129+%252823+February%252C+moving+to+Shelbyville%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUBy0FQ-Mf4aYr_v1SZcyWVuwCsMEHvl5hy4Bd9BoBpKY0qnJ2_dTeJDItxOAKrgCoAWWv2Y7LkAIJ8Z965M_17apgiMeIddw31NEIPB2gDrUgdckLnUjGq1Nfplb7X_XCn4Ts/s640/DSC05129+%252823+February%252C+moving+to+Shelbyville%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And so it was, six months ago today, that we found ourselves moving into a beautiful two-bedroom apartment, three days before I started my new job. It was the most lovely blessing, and as we navigated those stressful early days of adjusting to a new home in a new place with new commutes, I found much comfort in recognizing the grace of this experience and the peace of affirmation. <br />

Life in our new home has not been perfect...but our new home has been the perfect place to navigate this next phase of our marriage. What a blessing that is, indeed.Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09516298467275236388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8850304.post-13652064912435091232018-06-21T17:29:00.000-04:002018-06-27T17:50:43.371-04:00focus: summertime<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<a href="http://sleepeybearsspot.blogspot.com/2017/06/insist-summer-bucket-list.html" target="_blank">Last year</a> was the first in which I made an official summer bucket list that I channeled intentional time and energy into completing; and even though my ambitions were distracted mid-summer by the news that we'd be moving, I still had a lot of fun with it.<br />
<br />
I did hesitate this year, though, when considering whether to do a 2018 version. My word for this year is <b><i>Focus</i></b>, and in my overthoughtful way, I worried that creating a summer bucket list might distract from my efforts to really live deeply in all that word is encompassing for me right now. But then I saw the beautiful lists that two of my favorite bloggers created (in <a href="http://joythebaker.com/2018/06/summer-bucket-list-2018/" target="_blank">New Orleans</a> and <a href="http://www.shutterbean.com/2018/summer-bucket-list-2018/" target="_blank">the Bay Area</a>), and was reminded that my list doesn't have to be something so unique as to exclude ambitions and efforts I already have for day-to-day life.<br />
<br />
In fact, perhaps my summer bucket list might be the perfect tool with which to <b><i>Focus </i></b>even more clearly on what I want to enjoy and celebrate and savor.<br />
<br />
So here's the list I drafted for myself at the beginning of June, shared today to celebrate the first day of the summer season...<br />
<ul>
<li>Make sweet tea every week.</li>
<li>Do something fun every month to explore.</li>
<li>Spend time at the pool.</li>
<li>See fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July.</li>
<li>Lose pounds...healthily.</li>
<li>Visit the Louisville Zoo.</li>
<li>Enjoy summer treats (i.e. snow cones and local ice cream).</li>
<li>Make one scrapbook layout each week.</li>
<li>Visit the Jeptha Creed Distillery.</li>
</ul>
While simple, I am looking forward to all the life represented in each ambition.<br />
<br />
What's on your list?Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09516298467275236388noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8850304.post-89269262139307608752018-03-22T17:40:00.000-04:002018-03-22T17:40:34.590-04:00my day in the life<i>I almost didn't participate in Ali Edwards' most recent <a href="https://aliedwards.com/projects/day-in-the-life" target="_blank">Day in the Life</a>. I just recently started a new job, and I'm still getting settled into a daily routine (and our new home!). Then I realized that was exactly why I <u>should </u>document the day...to capture these new routines, and the unfolding of this new moment in life. Without further ado, here is what Thursday, 15 March 2018, was like.</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3u-p-6jhi3KSdYPXH3xQCUE4NpTIF4CWtJJPri5GAmEuCoz62xNg92LL2bX5AD7MPjlOaD_GF3CN878nV_1IHVSK4La7ks3hg3t0LMNEHtCio6JecJKnye26Te6GcfDJA0f9P/s1600/DSC05319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3u-p-6jhi3KSdYPXH3xQCUE4NpTIF4CWtJJPri5GAmEuCoz62xNg92LL2bX5AD7MPjlOaD_GF3CN878nV_1IHVSK4La7ks3hg3t0LMNEHtCio6JecJKnye26Te6GcfDJA0f9P/s640/DSC05319.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
5:13 am...I start my day with the First 5 Bible devotion. We're in the first week of a new study about the minor prophets, and I'm curious to read some of these books I've previously only flipped over.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7f3GdcQVSjj3xfo8Rhyphenhyphenfy3Ugry9sH1ctJ4B0US_U-9rRYUN0PEdLKHdA3kPG_tgON0Y4iMPJH7lImeEAho9q_UsW8fxmV4rVuJ3wEBQZ5uIJofWQ1OBQVwlkMtqw2ommUSPM6/s1600/DSC05320.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7f3GdcQVSjj3xfo8Rhyphenhyphenfy3Ugry9sH1ctJ4B0US_U-9rRYUN0PEdLKHdA3kPG_tgON0Y4iMPJH7lImeEAho9q_UsW8fxmV4rVuJ3wEBQZ5uIJofWQ1OBQVwlkMtqw2ommUSPM6/s640/DSC05320.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
5:42 am...Following my devotion, I sit in meditation using the Insight Timer app. Since starting my new job, I have been steadfast in completing both my devotion and meditation; and that consistency is a blessing to the day's beginning.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5c3NW8gtS8Y6e6ZK4rZGCQUyWZmfDYIAb-ZkrHOmaKJyi-XdXYOJ4iTxbygydcFsO6GGMaVjL9fQgesZeBwRgriCK96lN2TcC04jGy0OsDzi6BYZk2To0yvbqxKUZY5LOcTlK/s1600/DSC05321.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5c3NW8gtS8Y6e6ZK4rZGCQUyWZmfDYIAb-ZkrHOmaKJyi-XdXYOJ4iTxbygydcFsO6GGMaVjL9fQgesZeBwRgriCK96lN2TcC04jGy0OsDzi6BYZk2To0yvbqxKUZY5LOcTlK/s640/DSC05321.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
5:43 am...As I walk from the living room to the bathroom, I pause to change the date on my perpetual calendar. (And yes, we still have a healthy pumpkin from back in the fall.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzD-ly7uWZLrR7ZGYMgEHZuug-qk9-XqUr3K04KRE6lvi8NM9Ofd3-ln7ukBaXQBkbQRroSkRZ9Gfmb_3xreXCmfCBWI1kUi0GStFpdomBuRQWsCFGJOne0Vuo2MQH_2RgmvFS/s1600/DSC05335.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzD-ly7uWZLrR7ZGYMgEHZuug-qk9-XqUr3K04KRE6lvi8NM9Ofd3-ln7ukBaXQBkbQRroSkRZ9Gfmb_3xreXCmfCBWI1kUi0GStFpdomBuRQWsCFGJOne0Vuo2MQH_2RgmvFS/s640/DSC05335.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
6:36 am...I'm dressed and ready to go! The red scarf is in honor of a women's history month celebration on campus, and the pulled-back hair is a gift to myself.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwPlclUFQ90dWnEHtqkU-hgMt-KqrlAPqst_lI5ekAu4fXqK8EpJ_s5WD3ME1ywfQjlt2Ij0s6y4OIzdsg0HeOTfL5xHZ0fVC1cvIPq8GcGktYBYwfkj6Z_Y2Hcm-8gpGPplAp/s1600/DSC05337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwPlclUFQ90dWnEHtqkU-hgMt-KqrlAPqst_lI5ekAu4fXqK8EpJ_s5WD3ME1ywfQjlt2Ij0s6y4OIzdsg0HeOTfL5xHZ0fVC1cvIPq8GcGktYBYwfkj6Z_Y2Hcm-8gpGPplAp/s640/DSC05337.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
6:38 am...After getting ready, I move to the kitchen to pack my lunch. In my first couple weeks on the job (and in our new place), my lunches were not the best; so I am making an effort this week to incorporate healthier choices.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipuUP_j3rJvSWFisy8aB7aEk3I-kuRFTXtf42JXAKeU0kyKkyI_n9aY4vbtI02xvDmNddwSjXR_CZ_9zdKiai06WSdyNWHCffgKpXif1322QgPQeUJE1zti8LMGokCEWgunRMR/s1600/DSC05351.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipuUP_j3rJvSWFisy8aB7aEk3I-kuRFTXtf42JXAKeU0kyKkyI_n9aY4vbtI02xvDmNddwSjXR_CZ_9zdKiai06WSdyNWHCffgKpXif1322QgPQeUJE1zti8LMGokCEWgunRMR/s640/DSC05351.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
7:05 am...Because we live in between two major cities, I start my morning commute with one Christian radio station, and transition to another as the first station's signal fades. As a side note, I am so (so!) ready for daylight to return to my morning commute.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1hbV8i8MH9r3spQr-9eA3PCv9_rd9dacPnOzvI2KyQsq7WboZ63xUH8tUmldOX8o3LDUFmFjni4gnkzRzf9t3zzpoeYGBKwsqKKX_MzMM8Yyja1gE8bYggmxdALeXs_bcJIjv/s1600/DSC05354.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1hbV8i8MH9r3spQr-9eA3PCv9_rd9dacPnOzvI2KyQsq7WboZ63xUH8tUmldOX8o3LDUFmFjni4gnkzRzf9t3zzpoeYGBKwsqKKX_MzMM8Yyja1gE8bYggmxdALeXs_bcJIjv/s640/DSC05354.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
7:15 am...This is my exit! There's usually a bit of a back-up here, as people figure out which lane they want to be in; but I am grateful that traffic still moves pretty steadily.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz21s3z87k3yrgvwzwtwprBg64Eh_m0LiIFDRmV_YsLx8jyGkVpskjG6VDaR7-MN8oPGuiqSQ8S5X4mX6ROYa2o1cxfi_gl0TofSJzRlRzZPdUqoI3s6JbGnqhyUDmC8AmIk1E/s1600/DSC05358_LI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz21s3z87k3yrgvwzwtwprBg64Eh_m0LiIFDRmV_YsLx8jyGkVpskjG6VDaR7-MN8oPGuiqSQ8S5X4mX6ROYa2o1cxfi_gl0TofSJzRlRzZPdUqoI3s6JbGnqhyUDmC8AmIk1E/s640/DSC05358_LI.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
7:43 am...This is the desk where I will spend the next nine-ish hours. I am enjoying having an office again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
7:51 am...While the weather is still cold, oatmeal makes a good breakfast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
7:58 am...After breakfast, I take a few minutes to prep for my day. I'm still new enough here that my days are not yet filled with appointments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
12:18 pm...I work in an office with only two other primary staff. It's a delight to get along with them well enough already that we're making lunch plans.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA0v9i_QsmGTlpZk0p4wCeUormGy3O7dp1Iw5pX-YdPy7qtUFl44YlxwgnWFutEcbaO3YxjOiAVt3gwyiqrQFx1tFHlqUtfD21pmQMHTq13BuAMLQ6j_gkvpuE95Zd1yz9FHaT/s1600/DSC05373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA0v9i_QsmGTlpZk0p4wCeUormGy3O7dp1Iw5pX-YdPy7qtUFl44YlxwgnWFutEcbaO3YxjOiAVt3gwyiqrQFx1tFHlqUtfD21pmQMHTq13BuAMLQ6j_gkvpuE95Zd1yz9FHaT/s640/DSC05373.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
5:33 pm...Because of the rush-hour traffic on the road next to campus, I usually spend a bit of time after 5 pm completing some personal tasks before I leave the office. Today was a bit tedious mentally, so I am ready to leave a bit sooner than usual.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

5:44 pm...Additionally, it's a lovely sunny day. That means driving with the windows open!<br />

6:28 pm...I stop at the gas station in front of my neighborhood to save myself a stop the next morning. Hooray for fuel reward points!<br />

7:35 pm...I watch my husband's favorite basketball team play in their first-round tournament game.<br />

7:39 pm...At the same time, I'm unpacking boxes and finding homes for whatever's inside.<br />
<br />

<br />
7:42 pm...I've also been making dinner while all that was going on, and it's time to eat! Tonight, it's just me at home for dinner, so I package the leftovers as meals that either I or my husband will eat at some point over the weekend.<br />
<br />

<br />
7:45 pm...This is easily one of my favorite weeknight dinners - turkey burgers, steamed carrots, and steamed white sticky rice. Yum! I eat it while I watch the rest of the basketball game (and am relieved my husband's team pulled off the win).<br />

<br />
8:43 pm...In an effort to be on social media less, I have been letting myself have a block of time each evening to browse and catch up on Facebook and Instagram.<br />

10:32 pm...After unpacking more boxes and folding some laundry, I take a few minutes to pick out my clothes for the next day.<br />

11:10 pm...Bedtime! I pause to write down what I appreciated most about the day, then climb under the sheets, turn out the light, and fall asleep...ready to do much of the same the next day!</div>

<br />
In 2017, I participated in <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/5493-2017-reading-challenge" target="_blank">GoodReads' Reading Challenge</a> for the second year...and I came oh, so close to reaching my goal!!<br />
<br />
When I set the goal - 52 books in 2017 - it felt totally reasonable. Even though there might be some weeks where I didn't read a book, I also knew that, during the summer, I would <a href="http://sleepeybearsspot.blogspot.com/2017/07/where-youll-find-me-on-weekends.html" target="_blank">sit at the pool</a> and read at a pretty fast pace. What I didn't know was that, two-thirds of the way through the summer, Wildcat Guy would take a job in Kentucky; and the luxurious indulgence of reading poolside would be diminished by weekend trips back and forth to the Bluegrass State, preparing for the move, etc. Books were being packed, not read.<br />
<br />
So by early November, I was definitely off-pace to reach my goal. However...and this is a big however...one of the perks of interim unemployment is time to sit and read.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Hello, leisurely breakfast reading! </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Hello, mid-afternoon reading!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>Hello, bedtime-by-myself reading!</i></div>
<br />
Thus it was, a few days before the New Year, that I found myself coming within two books of reaching my goal. But I also found myself in the predicament of having started a few different books that are good but dense, layered with some familial common sense that meant focusing on time with loved ones in the last week of the year v. staying holed up in an armchair reading like a machine.<br />
<br />
In total, I ended 2017 reading fifty books, and having started an additional five (as pictured above). That feels like one heck of a great effort - a 96% I feel fantastic about - and I'm pleased to note that there were plenty of interesting reads in that fifty.<br />
<br />
And the fun bonus of having ended the year with books started? Wrapping up the first week of the new year with books already finished! 2 of 52 in 2018, done.Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09516298467275236388noreply@blogger.com0
